Words Worth Hearing
Norman B. Rice, the former Mayor of Seattle, recently said the following in a speech:
" . . .Martin Luther King, Mohandas Ghandi or Nelson Mandela. These men, in my mind, were true leaders, true heroes. Individuals who believed in something greater than themselves. People true to their values, courageous and compassionate . . .
. . . Well, each of us can be a leader. Each of us can be a hero. We are leaders and heroes when we embrace the values of citizenship, compassion and community . . . and we assume personal responsibility for making the world a better place. Each of us can make a difference. We just need to decide that we want to make a difference . . . I would love for the 21st Century to be the century of civic responsibility. There would be no Person of the Century, but rather People of the Century. And the People of the Century would be lauded as the society that saved civilization. I hope you'll be a part of it . . . "
