Case Studies: How ABW Can Impact Your Community
Forest Park High School
“We need to maintain ABW. Athletes for a Better World has meant so much to players, parents, coaches, athletic directors, and others.
As the Athletic Director at Forest Park High School, ABW helps us to deal with the individual as a member of the team and most notably as a member of society.
Our athletes have to exhibit behaviors that others may choose to emulate, because many of them are just beginning to find themselves. We have to stress this daily. This Code for Living is as crucial to all of our athletes as they aspire to reach the next level of participation. We strive daily to instill these messages into their minds. You can hear echoes both on and off the field that they must become role models so others can emulate their behavior. The positive overtones make for a better athletic experience.
After we instituted ABW in our school, our athletes and fans began a new approach to our athletic program. They were told that involvement in ABW would help change the culture of our sixteen sports on campus. By using its formula, their individual character would change, and others would appreciate the changes. On April 28th, received the Region 4A Sportsmanship Award for 2003. This award serves as living proof that the Code for Living works.
At Forest Park High School, we will continue in our efforts to promote sportsmanship, character, and citizenship in all of our sports. Next year, we will distribute the Code for Living to our visiting teams in the region and all spectators. We will plead with them to always demonstrate sportsmanship. Our ABW signs remain in our lobby area as a constant reminder that we promote messages of good sportsmanship. This fall, we will institute the ABW Athlete of the Month Award to recognize both male and female athletes who exemplify those values found in the Code for Living.
I urge all of you to support ABW and let us continue to work toward the betterment of our community.”
