Resources
for Athletes

Here are some suggestions for getting involved with ABW and returning character-driven behavior into the sport experience.  For more ideas, please contact us and ask one of the program directors or education director for assistance.

Join ABW:

  1. Adopt the Code for Living as the standard expectation of behavior and distribute the Code to all coaches, athletes and parents.
  2. Conduct a workshop that encourages all members of your program – athletes, coaches, trainers, parents, officials, cheerleaders, etc. – to join ABW.
  3. Clearly state to each coach that they are expected to promote sportsmanship as a member of your program and model the values stated in the Code for Living to their team.
  4. Distribute ABW materials (Code for Living, Curriculum, posters, newsletter, etc.) to everyone involved in your program and encourage them to use the curriculum with their team or children to reinforce the values of the Code for Living.

Recognize honorable character:

  1. Give ABW Spirit trophies at your banquets to those athletes who best exemplified the Spirit of ABW and nominate them for the State Spirit of ABW award.
  2. Give an ABW Spirit trophy to the team that best exemplifies ABW in your program.
  3. Have your communications (newspaper, newsletter, emails) recognize “Good Sports” each issue.  This could be a player, coach, parent, official, or fan, who has best exemplified the Spirit of ABW.

Promote the ABW message:

  1. At all athletic competitions, distribute the Code for Living to fans as they arrive and have the PA announcer read the Code before the game begins, asking them to demonstrate sportsmanship at all athletic events.
  2. Demonstrate sportsmanship to visiting teams at all competitions.
    1. Create banners welcoming opponents and fans to your facility
    2. Ask home team fans to stand and applaud as visiting team is introduced as well as the home team.
    3. Thank the officials after each competition
  3. Add the Code for Living to game programs, schedules, rosters and other printed materials from your department.
  4. Hang ABW posters in your athletic facilities.
  5. Add an ABW banner and link the ABW website to your homepage to show your commitment to the Code for Living.

Involve your community:

  1. Encourage teams to organize and participate in a community service project.
  2. Use the Code for Living as a theme when speaking to athletes or at public events about your program.
  3. Introduce ABW to your board of directors or booster club.
